The Green Lantern Corps is a group of interstellar law enforcement agents acting under the direction of the Guardians of the Universe. The Guardians were one of the first races to evolve following the creation of the universe. The Guardians and their agents have existed for billions of years and exist at least up through the 30th century.

This article is not a complete history of the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe. Rather, it provides context for events in which the Legion or Legionnaires took part.

Green Lantern Corps

The self-styled Guardians of the Universe, on the planet Oa, set about creating an interstellar police force and using a "power battery" on Oa, they founded the Green Lantern Corps. Each member, 7200 in all, was responsible for a certain sector of space (two per sector, in 3600 sectors). Earth was in sector 2814.

Each of the Green Lanterns wears a power ring capable of generating emerald energy constructs. Some call the ring "the most powerful weapon in the universe" because it's only limited by the wearer's imagination and willpower.

Among those in the 21st century to wear a Green Lantern ring were Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner, all of Earth. Jenni-Lynn Hayden, also of Earth, wielded Green Lantern-like power as Jade. Other heroes to wear the ring included Kilowog and Katma Tui. G'nort was also a Green Lantern but was not as successful as the others at controlling it.

Not all who have worn the rings over the millennia have been heroes, though, including Sinestro and one who would later be known as Universo.

The time period between the 20th and 30th centuries is not well documented, and the Green Lantern Corps activities in this time is more or less unknown.

30th Century Green Lanterns

The Legion first met members of the Green Lantern Corps when a number of Green Lanterns had been possessed by Star Conquerors, a race of starfish-like creatures that attach to the face and control the mind of whoever they are attached to. The Corps had been attacking Earth when they were stopped and freed by the Legion. One of Earth's Green Lanterns, Jordana Gardner, comes from a long line of Green Lanterns that stretch back to the 20th century (presumably her ancestors include Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner). Earth's other Green Lantern is Gen'Ma, who resembles a giant panda. As the "Teen Lantern" and the youngest person recruited for the Corps, Gardner was offered Legion membership, despite the rule against a Legionnaire's powers being derived from artificial sources, but she declined. The Legion and the Corps left on good terms.
