Background

After issue #325, Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes began reprinting issues of Legion of Super-Heroes v3 (the Baxter series). DC was experimenting with a format similar to the publication of hardcover and softcover books, with paperbacks being released a year after the hardcovers. Tales and the Baxter series were published simultaneously for a year, after which Tales reprinted the Baxter issues. The v3 series was only available through mail order or in comics specialty shops, while Tales was available on newstands as well. The direct only market was fairly new at the time, and the idea was that the reprints would be available a year later for a lower price to customers who didn't frequent comic shops. The concept was discontinued after Tales #354.
