Mike Grell defined the Legion's look and feel in the mid-1970's, helming the covers and story art for about two years. For another two years he continued to create the Legion's cover artwork. Beginning with inks over Dave Cockrum's pencils in Superboy v1 #202, he continued to be a part of the Legion creative team for about 40 issues, as well as handling the new art duties for two tabloid-sized specials and covers the first 8 issues of the Karate Kid solo series. He later returned for a guest spot in the 45th anniversary issue spotlight on Lightning Lad in Legion of Super-Heroes v3 #45.
