Story Synopsis

TV listing

The Legion has returned from the 41st century with Superman-X, a genetically-enhanced Superman clone. But Imperiex, the destroyer of galaxies, has reached the 31st century first -- and unleashed all of the Legion's greatest enemies. To restore order and combat this near-invincible foe, the Legion will once again turn to the past for help in the form of an older, more mature Superman with far greater grasp of his powers.

Expanded synopsis

Superman-X and the Legionnaires arrive in New Metropolis, only to find that Imperiex has been there already. The city is in ruins, the Legion HQ destroyed. But Brainiac 5 says that all is not lost, as it would take a lot worse before the future that they saw would come true. Timber Wolf hears a groan, and finds Phantom Girl buried beneath some rubble. They tell her they know about Imperiex, but she says that it's not him, it's all of them. In another part of the city, Colossal Boy gets blasted, and Bouncing Boy, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Matter-Eater Lad come to his rescue. The lineup of foes they face: Ron Karr, Wave, Mano, Tharok, Emerald Empress, Persuader, Tyr, Esper, and Hunter: the combined forces of the Fatal Five and the Light Speed Vanguard.

Bouncing Boy takes the offensive and rebounds all over the place to get close to the villains, but the Emerald Eye keeps blasting away at him until he falls. The Eye moves towards him, but Matter-Eater Lad jumps on it and takes a bite of the Eye. The feedback explosion stuns him and the Empress. Cosmic Boy uses magnetism to form a wall around the villains, while Esper (outside the wall) uses a mind-force blast to send Saturn Girl into the side of a building. Cosmic Boy flings Tharok against Ron Karr, but Mano catches him from behind as the Persuader, Tyr, and Hunter slice their way out of the debris wall. The Legionnaires with Superman-X catch up to the melee, and Brainiac 5 fills him in that this is the Legion of Super-Villains and the Fatal Five teaming up. Superman-X swoops down and protects Bouncing Boy from the Persuader. Chameleon Boy lands near fellow shape-shifter Ron Karr, who wants to know who the new Superman is. Saturn Girl breaks free and mentally fights Esper, but when Tharok hits her, it distracts Lightning Lad and Brainiac 5, who are both blasted by Tyr. Tyr and the remaining villains leave due to the shifting odds, but they leave behind the Emerald Empress, who they claim is powerless without a fully functioning Eye. The Eye is leaking energy, while Matter-Eater Lad awakens with glowing green eyes. Hunter transports the villains away. Colossal Boy, Saturn Girl, and Cosmic Boy are taken to the hospital. Bouncing Boy notices that there are only two bodies for Triplicate Girl, but she doesn't want to talk about it. Brainy announces that Colossal Boy and Cosmic Boy are out of action indefinitely, Matter-Eater Lad has been left insane from the Emerald Eye's energies, and Esper's brain blast has left Saturn Girl catatonic. Emerald Empress offers to explain how the villains all escaped Takron-Galtos, since they left her behind she owes them nothing. An explosion on the planet took out power to the cell doors, and all the prisoners escaped. Legionnaires were sent to stop the uprising, but they were too late. Validus surprised them all and knocked them out, where they were sent back to the now-vacant and now-working prison cells. The Empress said that they didn't know who freed them, but they didn't care. Superman-X and Lightning Lad argue over what to do next - rescue the trapped Legionnaires, or find and fight Imperiex. The group that's at the hospital is all that's left, but Bouncing Boy reminds them that there's still one left: Superman, from the 21st century. Brainy borrows Phantom Girl's Time Bubble controller, and pops back in time. In an instant, he's back with Superman - but he's bigger and more powerful than they last saw him.

Brainy tells the group that he thought the situation called for a more experienced Superman, so that's why he's older. Phantom Girl has a huge crush on the no-longer-skinny Superman. Superman tells the group that Brainy filled him in, and he welcomes Superman-X to the team. The clone says that he's not part of the team, he's just there to do a job. Superman agrees with the Legionnaires that they should save their teammates first, then go after Imperiex when they're at full strength. Looking in on the unconscious Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad vows revenge on the ones who did that to her. Bouncing Boy tries to console Triplicate Girl, who tells him that with the loss of a body, she's now calling herself Duo Damsel. Bouncing Boy tells her not to get used to that name, since if they stop Imperiex they'll be able to recover the missing body. But that's a big "if", since they've never faced anything like Imperiex before. At the Legion HQ, Imperiex breaks in and is impervious to their defenses as he makes his way to Computo. Accessing its controls, he opens up a passageway to Computo's memory banks, where he now has access to every bit of information the Legion has. Back at the hospital, Superman talks to his clone, comparing him (obliquely and not by name) to Batman, someone who is a loner but still does good work with a team. Superman-X says he's not willing to compromise to save dozens at the expense of trillions who might die if they don't stop Imperiex. Brainy comes to tell them that Imperiex is at Legion HQ, accessing Computo. Superman-X leaves, followed by Brainy, as Superman goes to the others. Imperiex emerges from Computo's chamber as Superman-X arrives, who covers the villain with his green crystals. Imperiex breaks out easily and they fight. Superman-X tells Imperiex that the rest of the Legion is on a wild goose chase, which leaves just the two of them. But Validus, who has accompanied Imperiex, surprises Superman-X and pounds him down. Imperiex is about to deliver a killing blow when Brainiac 5 arrives and knocks down Imperiex. Brainy is swatted aside, but he accomplished his job. A ship appears, and Imperiex leaves with Validus. Superman-X and Brainiac 5 grab a Legion Cruiser and give chase. Suddnely an alarm goes off, the Cruiser's self-destruct has been activated, and it will explode in 30 seconds. Brainy is locked out, and the Cruiser explodes.

Brainy's force field saved them both, and they are rescued by a Battle Cruiser carrying the rest of the team. Chameleon Boy explains that the ship is his dad's, and since he's rich, he let his son borrow one of the "beaters". Brainy notes that since the ship isn't part of Computo's database, Imperiex can't remotely blow it up. Superman-X wants off the ship if it's going to Takron-Galtos, but Superman argues that he could do more with more help. He leaves the ship to find Imperiex while the others continue on. Duo Damsel tells Bouncing Boy that with a third of her gone, she's no longer like a tripod where they all can lean on each other for balance, but she doesn't want to let her teammates down. Phantom Girl hopes that Lightning Lad isn't distracted by his thoughts of revenge, but he tells her that she should be worried about her teammates on the planet, not him. The Legionnaires break into the room where their captive teammates are, as the combined group of villains enters the room. The teams clash: Superman vs Hunter, Persuader, and Mano; Brainiac 5 vs Ron Karr; Ron Karr vs Chameleon Boy; Tharok vs Lightning Lad, who is then blasted by Esper (and knocked out); Hunter vs Duo Damsel, who realizes that her fighting style was based on having three people, not two, until Bouncing Boy knocks down Hunter (and is knocked out himself); Wave vs Phantom Girl (who is knocked out); Ron Karr vs Chameleon Boy (who is knocked out); Brainy vs Tyr. Timber Wolf says that they're barely holding their own, until Esper tells them to stand down or Tharok will kill Duo Damsel. Tyr locks the rest of the team into cells, imprisoning everyone. As Esper prepares to do to Lightning Lad what she did to Saturn Girl, Superman-X busts in and blasts the locking mechansims, freeing the entire Legion. He tells Superman that fighting Imperiex with numerically superior manpower did make some sense. The team slowly takes out the villains one by one. Lightning Lad is ready to blast Esper in revenge for Saturn Girl, but Phantom Girl talks him out of it, saying that Saturn Girl wouldn't have wanted him to go down that road. When Esper tries to brain blast Phantom Girl, she kicks her and knocks her out, saying that this road would be acceptable. Duo Damsel adjusts her fighting style against Hunter, with Bouncing Boy finishing him off. He tells her that he's there to lean on if they need him. The villains, including Emerald Empress, are all locked back in their cells. Superman tells his clone that they couldn't have done it without him, but they'll have to come up with a new name so that they'll know who's who. Superman offers "Kell-El", a variation on his Kryptonian name. Kell-El accepts, as long as this means that they'll now be able to go after Imperiex. Meanwhile, Imperiex's ship lands, and with Validus at his side, he addresses the Dominion: they will not regret the pact they've made, and together they will destroy the Legion.

Trivia about the episode

  • Sometime between Seasons 1 and 2, the Light Speed Vanguard changed their name to the Legion of Super-Villains.
  • Emerald Empress refers to Timber Wolf as "Furball", a reference to his Glorithverse nickname.
  • Superman makes a reference to a friend of his who was a loner but did well as a member of a team. It's fairly clear he's referring to Batman, but never says the name.
  • Shrinking Violet now wears a green costume instead of purple.
  • Lightning Lord of the Light Speed Vanguard/Legion of Super-Villains does not appear in this episode.

Quotes

  • Bouncing Boy: "There is one Legionnaire we can still summon." Timber Wolf: "Good thinking!" Superman-X: "Who?" Brainiac 5: "Of course! He would be perfect!" Superman-X: "Who!" All: "Superman!" Superman-X: "What?" Phantom Girl: "Who is this guy again?" Superman-X: "Do I need a nametag? I'm Superman." Bouncing Boy: "We're talking the original, classic, golden oldie, one-and-only Superman!"
  • Superman-X: "By the way, thanks for the DNA."
  • Superman, to Superman-X: "I know we're supposed to be related, but you remind me more of a friend of mine. Strong-willed, a bit of a loner, and when the time came for him to be part of a team, he resisted, and while he never liked it, he'll tell you he did far more good as a member of that group than he ever could alone. It just took learning how to compromise." He's referring to Batman.
  • Imperiex: "Fight alone, perish alone!"
  • Brainiac 5, right before the Legion Cruiser explodes: "This is gonna hurt."
  • Phantom Girl: "My mom used to tell me that I'd wind up in Takron-Galtos if I didn't eat my vegetables. Suddenly, I have a craving for squash."
  • Tyr: "I suppose someone should say a few solemn words before the Legion is no more. Ha ha ha. You lose."

Adaptations

  • Matter-Eater Lad's insanity from eating the Emerald Eye is a reference to his insanity from eating the Miracle Machine.
