Synopsis

As numerous criminals threaten to kill the Legionnaires and members of the Workforce on Planet Hell, which is about to be consumed by the burning star that surrounds it, Brainiac 5 strikes a deal with them to keep the heroes alive (albeit as hostages) in exchange for his attempting to fix the force-field that shields them from the star so that it won't collapse and kill them all. The criminals agree to the deal, and Brainiac 5, Workforce member Evolvo, Saturn Girl and Invisible Kid, who suugests that he may be able to help as well, head down the pit where the planet's power supply had been before the criminals destroyed it.

Invisible Kid does not descend using his jet-pack immediately, as the others do, but waits at the rim of the pit and catches up to the others later. Brainiac 5, Evolvo and Invisible Kid get to work, and Brainiac 5 tells Saturn Girl to keep an eye on the other heroes so that if the criminals harm them, they can stop working.

Saturn Girl scans the other heroes, and hears Live Wire warn Spark about what he sees as a danger of violence stemming from their lightning powers. She sees Chameleon offering Leviathan food, making the giant Legionnaire his friend, and she sees Apparition get upset over discovering that Ultra Boy & Spider Girl are lovers, and sees Ultra Boy get distracted from his romantic interlude with Spider-Girl upon seeing Apparition.

Outside the holding cells, the criminals begin to fight with one another. In the pit, Brainiac 5 throws up his hands and despairs over the impossibility of fixing the destroyed power supply. The "warden" then threatens to kill them, and Invisible Kid suddenly declares that he has an idea. As the criminals above direct their frustrations at the Legion and Workforce, in the pit, Brainiac 5 and Evolvo dismiss Invisible Kid's idea, but are forced to try it by the threatening "warden."

The Legionnaires bust out of their cells and confront the criminals, and Saturn Girl, detecting this, asks the "warden" to calm the criminals down by letting her project his thoughts to them. He tries to do so, but also ends up projecting the thought that he is a racist who sees them all as members of inferior races, a fact which gets the criminals to attack him.

Evolvo changes into a stronger, less evolved form to hold off the onrush of criminals seeking to kill the "warden," and Invisible Kid finally finishes his work, which is to change the polarity of the force-field surrounding Planet Hell so that the star's electromagnetic energy repels the planet and spits it out, saving their lives. The criminals break through Evolvo's defence, but Invisible Kid holds them at bay with a smaller force-field.

Later, when Invisible Kid has focused the force-field to keep the criminals incarcerated, Cosmic Boy speaks to Live Wire, but Live Wire, knowing that he cannot rejoin the Legion, turns away and joins his Workforce teammates.
